1. SHORT NEWS

The President of the National Observatory of Athens has brought to the attention of Hel.A.S. a petition concerning support to the National Observatory. We encourage the members of Hel.A.S. to visit the site http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/support-the-historic-national-observatory-of-athens.html and act as they feel.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Evanthia Hatziminaoglou who recently moved to an ESO staff position as an ALMA support astronomer in the European ALMA Regional Centre.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Titos Matsakos who recently moved to CEA/Saclay (France) in a 1.5 year postdoctoral position to study radiative accretion shocks on Young Stellar Objects.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Manolis Xilouris (IAA/NOA), who has been granted an award from the J. S. Latsis Foundation for a project entitled "Probing inside the dense molecular clouds in galaxies".

2. THE SOLAR ORBITER MISSION

We are very pleased to inform our members that ESA's Science Programme Committee approved Solar Orbiter as the first M-class mission (M1), with a tentative launch date in January 2017. The meeting took place on 4 October 2011 at ESA's Headquarters in Paris. The Greek ESA/SPC Delegation (Dr. M. Georgoulis, RCAAM, Mr. V. Kaleridis, GSRT, and Dr. O. Malandraki, IAA) informed us that the mission was approved unanimously. This is great news for the Greek Astronomical community, as numerous members of our Society have worked tirelessly and consistently to this purpose for the past several years. This selection is in the best interests of the Greek Solar Physics community in particular, and there is vivid scientific and technological involvement from the Greek side. The full announcement of the Greek ESA/SPC delegation can be found in our web side (under the link "Greece & ESA").

3. THE 2012 IAU GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND MEMBERSHIP

The next General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union will take place in Beijing (China) in August 2012. At that time new IAU members will be selected. All Greek astronomers interested to join the IAU should contact the Greek National Committee for Astronomy, which is authorized to make the relevant proposal to the IAU. More information on this process and relevant deadlines will be available in the web page:

4. IMPRS SCHOOL ON ASTROPHYSICS IN GARCHING

The International Max-Planck Research School on Astrophysics (IMPRS) in Garching/Munich (Bavaria, Germany) is soliciting applications for its PhD program. The application deadline is 15 November, 2011. For more information, please check the School's web page at:
