1. SHORT NEWS

We would like to congratulate Dr. Georgios Livadiotis, a member of our Society, who was recently promoted to "Research Scientist" at the Southwest Research Institute.

2. UPCOMING ELECTIONS OF HEL.A.S.

All Ordinary and Junior members of Hel.A.S. must have received a letter from the Society by the end of this month. Please check your mailboxes! The letter will include the agenda of the 28th General Assembly of Hel.A.S., as well as the ballots and instructions from the Secretary on the voting process. Please read these instructions carefully and mail your ballots early, as they have to arrive at the hands of the Secretary before the 27th of June 2010.

A document including brief CVs of the candidates for the upcoming elections will become available online by the end of May (in "Announcements", under the "News & Events" link in our web page).

3. THE "20TH ANNIVERSARY SURVEY" OF HEL.A.S.

In the last General Assembly of our Society (Ioannina, September 2011), the Council announced its intention to conduct a "survey" of the research activities and needs, as well as the research infrastructures in Greece that our members use and/or think are necessary for their work. More information on this is now available on line in our web site. We strongly encourage all our members to read the relevant information here, complete the questionnaire they will find on the same page, and return it to the Secretary of the Society. We plan to announce the final results of the survey in the forthcoming conference of Hel.A.S. which will take place in September 2013, 20 years after the establishment of Hel.A.S. (hence the title of the survey!). Initial results may also be presented in the forthcoming General Assembly this June, if we receive a large number of completed questionnaires from you on time.

4. THE "2011-2013 BEST PhD AWARD" OF HEL.A.S.

More information on the "Best PhD Award" Competion, that the Society's Council announced last October (see the October 2011 Newsletter), is now available on line in our web site. We encourage all our members to read the relevant information here, and send their proposals to the Secretary of the Society.

5. JOBS ANNOUNCEMENT

The Hellenic National Space Weather Research (HNSWR) network (http://proteus.space.noa.gr/~hnswrn) announces the availability of four (4) post-doctoral research associate positions in Solar and Heliospheric Physics. The positions refer to basic research in the following topics: (1) buildup and triggering of eruptions in the solar atmosphere, (2) impact of eruptions in the solar atmosphere and coronal mass ejection (CME) formation, (3) CME propagation in the inner heliosphere and interaction with the ambient solar wind, and (4) response of Earth’s magnetosphere to variable solar forcing. Research will be performed in various Greek institutions, namely the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the National Observatory of Athens (1 position), the University of Athens and the Academy of Athens (1 position), the University of Ioannina (1 position), and the University of Thrace (1 position). Each position will have an initial one-year duration and, subject to performance, may be extended up to a maximum of three (3) years. The deadline for applications is May 31st, 2012 and the successful applicants are expected to start working in September 2012. For more information, interested colleagues may refer to the full text of the announcement for each research team at: http://proteus.space.noa.gr/~hnswrn/news.html.

6. THE SEVENTH HEIDELBERG SUMMER SCHOOL

The International Max Planck Research School for Astronomy & Cosmic Physics at the University of Heidelberg, announces the 7th Heidelberg Summer School on "Computational Astrophysics: Physical Foundations & Numerical Techniques". The school will take place on September 10-14, 2012. It covers important topics in computational astrophysics, highlighting both the physical foundations and the numerical techniques for simulations of the formation and evolution of cosmic structures on a variety of scales. The primary lecture courses will cover N-body techniques for collisionless and collisional systems, numerical fluid dynamics with particle-based and mesh-based techniques, magnetohydrodynamics, radiative transfer, as well as modern trends in high-performance computing techniques. The program is complemented with short lectures on topics such as chemical reaction networks, kinetic approaches, or special matrix solvers. For more information visit:

7. A TRAINING COURSE ON HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION

A European training course on High School Education will take place in Athens, in October 15-19. The course is organised by "Hands-on Universe Europe", the "National Observatory of Athens", and the Greek Ministry of Education. More information is available here. Members who are interested in participating, please contact Dr. E. Chatzichristou (elthchatz@gmail.com).
