1. SHORT NEWS

We would like to congratulate Mr. Nikolaos Nanouris who has recently obtained his PhD from the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, under the supervision of Prof. Evgenia Antonopoulou. The title of his dissertation was: "A Study on the Long-Term Observed Orbital Period Variations in Eclipsing Binary Systems".

We would like to congratulate Mr. Manos Chatzopoulos, who recently received the David Allen Benfield memorial fellowship for excellence in research work by a senior graduate student at the Department of Astronomy of the University of Texas at Austin. Manos Chatzopoulos also received the University of Texas Graduate School William C. Powers continuing fellowship for the academic year 2012-2013 given to outstanding graduate students of the University for a well-defined program of research.

2. MEETING OF THE GOVERNING COUNCIL OF Hel.A.S.

The Governing Council of Hel.A.S. met on the 28th of May 2012, to discuss the status of members with outstanding dues, the amount of the annual membership fee, and various issues related to the upcoming elections of the Society. All members are strongly encouraged to read the minutes of this GC meeting, which are available here.

3. UPCOMING ELECTIONS OF Hel.A.S.

The General Assembly on the 29th of June, and the voting for the Hel.A.S. new Governing Council will take place in the Seminars' room of the Astrophysics, Astronomy and Mechanics Section of the Physics Department of the University of Athens (the room is located on the third floor of the Department's building). The General Assembly will start at 13.30 pm, and the voting will last for four hours after the Assembly is ended.

All Ordinary and Junior members of Hel.A.S. must have received a letter from the Society. Please check your mailboxes! The letter should include the agenda of the 28th General Assembly of Hel.A.S., as well as the ballots and instructions from the Secretary on the voting process. Please read these instructions carefully and post your ballots early, as they have to arrive at the hands of the Secretary before the 27th of June 2010. We remind our members that, in order to be eligible to vote, you must have paid the 2011 membership fee.

A document including brief CVs of the candidates for the upcoming elections is available online here and all members of the Society are invited to read it. We also encourage our members to read the financial account of the Governing Council for the years 2010-2012 (here), and the account of the G.C. activities for the same period (here).

We would like to remind all our members that you must send to the Secretary, as soon as possible, any applications for new members who wish to join our Society and/or any applications for change of status for existing members. All applications must be approved by the General Assembly of Hel.A.S.

4. TALK BY J. SPYROMILIO IN THE Hel.A.S. GENERAL ASSEMBLY

As it is customary, there will be a talk before the start of the Society's G.A. on June the 29th. This year's talk will be given by Jason Spyromilio, a member of our Society, and a senior scientist at the European Southern Observatory. The talk will begin at 12:00 noon, in the same room where the General Assembly will take place. The title of the talk is: "The European Extremely Large Telescope." All members are strongly encouraged to read the related abstract and info here and attend the talk.

5. ENGLISH-GREEK DICTIONARY FOR ASTRONOMICAL TERMS.

The Council of the Hel.A.S. has prepared an English-Greek dictionary of Astronomical terms. The work for this dictionary began years ago with the initiative of the then President of Hel.A.S., Prof. Paul Laskarides. The current version of the dictionary, which is largely based on the work done by Prof. John Seiradakis, with numerous additions from Prof. Vlahakis and Mrs Koutsantoniou, a graduate student at the University of Athens, can be found here

6. CALL FOR PROPOSALS TO ORGANIZE EAS COLLOQUIA

In order to promote medium size meetings in astronomy and astrophysics and related areas, the European Astronomical Society (EAS) launched in 2011 a series of EAS Colloquia (EASColl) to provide a mechanism to exchange ideas and promote cross-fertilisation of ideas between scientists working in Europe. EASColl are intended to be medium-size meetings of 50 to 80 people dedicated to either established scientific domains or emerging fields of small/growing communities, which can not apply for support to the large EU Networks or qualify as International Astronomical Union Symposia (IAUS). Therefore, EAS is pleased to announce the second Call for Proposals to organise EAS Colloquia, with deadline for submission June 25, 2012. The selection, done by the EAS Council, is expected to take place during the next Council meeting at the Rome EWASS2012. The funding is allocated for the 2013 calendar year.
