1. SHORT NEWS

The preliminary program of the 4th Hellenic Astronomical Conference has
been for some time available on-line. For more information on the
program and other issues, please visit the web page of the conference,
found in the last section of this newsletter.

During the forthcoming 13th General Assembly of Hel.A.S., a lecture
with the title:
"Blazars: Ta pleon akraia ergasthria sto Sympan"
will be delivered by Dr. Markos Georganopoulos (MPI, Heidelberg). The
event will take place at 12:30pm on Saturday, September 18th, 1999, at
the conference hall of "Doryssa Bay" Hotel at Pythagorion in Samos.
Some compelling issues of present day astrophysics were discussed in the
summer school "The neutron star - black hole connection", which took
place in Elounda, Crete, last June. The school has been organized by
Chryssa Kouveliotou, Jan van Paradijs and Joseph Ventura. Further details on

2. MEMBERS APPOINTED IN NEW POSITIONS

Dr. V. Charmandaris has moved to a Staff Astronomer position at
the Astronomy Department of Cornell University, NY, USA.
Dr. E. Chatzichristou has moved to a Postdoctoral Fellowship
position at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, MD, USA.
Dr. I. Seimenis has been appointed Chairman of the Department of
Mediterranean Studies, Univ. of Aegean, Greece.
Dr. K. Xilouris has moved to a Research Staff position at
the National Radio Observatory at Charlottesville, VA, USA.

3. JOB OPENINGS

The Institute of Ionospheric and Space Research of the National
Observatory of Athens invites applications for a position at the level of
"Researcher D" in the field of "Satellite systems with emphasis in
telecommunications applications".
