1. SHORT NEWS

We would like to congratulate V. Charmandaris who was recently promoted to the position of Professor of Observational Astrophysics at the Department of Physics of the University of Crete.

We would like to congratulate I. Papadakis who was recently promoted to the position of Professor of Observational Astrophysics at the Department of Physics of the University of Crete.

 
2. HEL.A.S. Elections

All Ordinary and Junior members of Hel.A.S. who are eligible to vote must have received a letter from the Society by the end of this month. Please check your mailboxes! The letter will include the agenda of the 32nd General Assembly of Hel.A.S., as well as the ballots and instructions from the Secretary on the voting process. Please read these instructions carefully and mail your ballots early, as they have to arrive at the hands of the Secretary before the 10th of June 2014.

We would like to remind all our members that they must send to the Secretary, as soon as possible, any applications for new members who wish to join our Society and/or any applications for change of status for existing members. All applications must be approved by the General Assembly of Hel.A.S. which will take place in mid June.

 
3. FUNDING OF SHORT TERM SCIENTIFIC MISSIONS ON NEUTRON STARS

The ESF COST action "NewCompStar" has an open call (deadline 30/6/2014) for funding a number of short term research visits. Greece is a full member of this COST action and Greek scientists working in any area related to neutron stars, who would like obtain funding for a research visit to collaborators in another country within the specific COST action, are encouraged to apply. 4. GRADUATE STUDIES IN ASTROPHYSICS IN CRETE FOR 2014-2015

The Department of Physics of the Univ. of Crete, in collaboration with the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) will issue in early May a Call for Applications for the 2014-2015 Graduate Program in "Advanced Physics". A number of graduate fellowships towards a 1-year Master's Program in "Astrophysics & Space Physics", as well as towards a 3-year PhD Program in Theoretical or Observational Astrophysics are available. 5. ESO STUDENSHIP PROGRAMME

The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere awards several studentship positions each year in both Germany and Chile. The goal of the ESO studentship program is to connect Ph.D. students and their advisors throughout the ESO community with the activities and people at one of the world's foremost observatories. These positions are open to students enrolled in a university Ph.D. programme, preferentially but not necessarily in an ESO member state. For more information, you can visit their webpage.

 
6. PHD POSITION IN STRASBURG OBSERVATOIRE

The Strasbourg Observatoire is seeking to appoint a PhD candidate in the area of Theoretical/Computational Astrophysical Fluids to work on Magnetic Reconnection in Pulsars environments. The candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. H. Baty (University of Strasbourg) in collaboration with Prof. J. The position will be available as early as Sept. 2014. The initial appointment will be for three years (20,000 Euros (gross) per year, IDEX grant).

 
7. MSc STUDIES IN PADOVA UNIVERSITY

The University of Padova has a program of excellence called the "Galilean School of Higher Education". In this program students are provided with free lodging and are supported in various manners. They are also expected to attend the curricular courses of their Department and pass the relevant exams with high score requirements. The Galilean School of Higher Education will shortly announce the recruitment of 5 foreign students entering in the 1st year of a 2-years Master Degree Program (for the Departments structured around the 3+2 Bologna system) or in the 4th year of a single cycle degree, in any field of research. The Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Padova hosts numerous active researchers in various fields of Astronomy.
