1. Short News - 12th Hel.A.S. Conference

Please be reminded that the deadline for Abstract Submission for the 12th Conference of Hel.A.S. is April 24. Also, please check the conference web-site regularly in the following weeks, as new information (related to accomodation, social events etc.) will be posted shortly.

2. Historic Records and Greek Astronomy PhDs

We wish to inform all members of Hel.A.S. that a dedicated webpage which collects historic records related to Greek Astronomy has been created at:

http://www.helas.gr/documents.php

In addition to the various annual reports of the research activities of Universities and research Institutes in Greece, we also include a list with all PhDs in astrophysics, dynamical astronomy and space physics awarded by Greek Universities over the past century. The list, available as a PDF file is maintained by Prof. V. Charmandaris.
We would greatly appreciate if all members of the Society, in particularly the senior ones, review the information provided about those past PhDs and send any updates/corrections to Prof. V. Charmandaris. This feedback of the community is essential in order to ensure the completeness of these records.

3. IAASARS/NOA Donation to Hel.A.S

Since last year, following the decision of the GA, the Society is covering the cost of annual publication fees for astronomers working in Greek Institutions to the journal “Astronomy & Astrophysics”. The director of IAASARS/NOA and former Secretary of our Society, Prof. Vassilis Charmandaris, notified the GC that IAASARS wishes to continue contributing to these costs also for this year, by donating the sum of 1,500 euros to Hel.A.S. The President of Hel.A.S, Prof. Loukas Vlahos, and the GC wish to thank Prof. Charmandaris and IAASARS/NOA for this donation, which they accept with gratitude.

4. Call for Proposals for the 2.3m Aristarchos Telescope

The Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications, and Remote Sensing of the National Observatory of Athens is pleased to announce the 2015 Call for Proposals for the 2.3m Aristarchos telescope. The observing period is between July 1st, 2015 and October 31st, 2015. Up to 25% of the time will be available to researchers affiliated with a Greek academic institution. The proposal deadline in March 31, 2015. For more information on the application process please visit the web page:

5. Hipparchos - Call for short articles on projects

The next issue (Issue 12) of Hipparchos is currently in preparation and will be distributed to the Society's members during the 12th Astronomical Conference. The Editorial Board of Hipparchos wishes to provide to our readers a snapshot of the current grant- or contract-supported research of the Society's members, to showcase the breadth and diversity of funded work by members in Greece and abroad. For this reason, the Hipparchos Editorial Board herewith invites members to submit a short, informative description of existing grants and projects that they lead or contribute to.

To enable the composition of a comprehensive list of projects, potential authors are informed that submitted contributions cannot exceed one (1) A4 Microsoft Word page typed with Times New Roman 12 fonts. This includes any image(s) that the authors might wish to provide. Any contribution that exceeds this limit will be sent back to the authors for shortening. All contributions (possibly multiple by a single author, in case of multiple active projects) should be submitted via e-mail to Manolis Georgoulis (manolis.georgoulis@academyofathens.gr) no later than April 15, 2015.

6. The 2015 Alpbach Summer School

The 2015 Alpbach Summer School is open to 60 selected young science and/or engineering students and graduates from among the member and cooperating states of the European Space Agency. Students participating in the School will explore what space missions can contribute to further scientific progress in the fields of Quantum- and Gravitational Physics. Most research in these scientific fields is carried out in ground based laboratories. The working language of the Summer School will be English and the application deadline is March 31, 2015.
