------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
- With this issue, our Electronic Newsletter becomes two years old! Cheers!
Every month, since February 1998, the editors have been communicating to
our members the activities, news and announcements of interest that came
to their attention. Please, do send us your announcements, news, comments
and suggestions. The E-Newsletter will distribute them as soon as possible.
- The phone/fax numbers of more than fourty members of the Society
listed in our onlined directory have been updated. Several members had
provided their latest coordinates during the last meeting of Hel.A.S.
in Samos. We take this opportunity to request once more that all members
check their online record in the web pages of Hel.A.S., in order to
verify whether the information listed there is correct. If you spot any
errors please contact the Secretary (varvogli@astro.auth.gr).
- The latest issue of Hipparchos newsletter has been sent to all
members. Check your mailboxes! For a sneak preview you may download it
as a postscript file from the web site of Hel.A.S.
- Due to poor and regretable communication with the Publisher of the
latest issue of Hipparchos (Vol. 1, 7, Dec., 1999), in the article
about the "New Site for the 2.3m telescope of NOA", it is mentioned that
"(the new telescope)... will be installed in a new, HOPEFULLY, much better
site than Kryonerion". From the remainder of the article, it becomes obvious
that the site is not "HOPEFULLY" a much better site, but IT IS a much
better site, with an average seeing during the winter months of 0.7
arcseconds. We are all looking forward to using the new telescope.
2. Hel.A.S. FORTHCOMING ELECTIONS
---------------------------------
Please note the following deadlines for the forthcoming elections of our
Society. Further deadlines will be announced as the June 2000 elections
are approaching.
- February 29, 2000: Last day for nominations of candidates by the
Ordinary members of the Society. The Nomination Forms will be
mailed to all Ordinary members by January 31 and posted on the web
pages of the Society
- April 10, 2000: The Council distributes the ballots to all
Ordinary and Junior members
3. HEL.A.S. PRIZE FOR THE BEST PH.D. IN 1999
--------------------------------------------
Members of the Hel.A.S. and other colleagues (Ph.D. supervisors in
particular) are encouraged to bring to the attention of the Council
potential candidates for the "Best Ph.D. in Astronomy" prize. The prize
will be awarded to an active junior member of the Society, who has
successfuly defended his/her Ph.D. thesis during 1999. The prize is
accompanied by the sum of 120.000 drx. The recipient will be selected by
the Council. Please note that this is an award. It is not a scholarship.
Therefore no "application" is involved. For more information please
contact the Secretary of Hel.A.S., Dr. H. Varvoglis (varvogli@astro.auth.gr).
4. TRAVEL ASSISTANCE FOR JENAM-2000
-----------------------------------
- Active members of Hel.A.S., with no financial obligations, can apply
for financial assistance to attend this year's meeting of the European
Astronomical Society in Moscow (JENAM-2000). We anticipate that a
small number of grants (about 10) will be offered to members who will
be presenting their work during the Meeting. The amount will be of the
order of 30000.- to 40000.- GDR. For further information please contact
the Secretary of the Society, Dr. H. Varvoglis (varvogli@astro.auth.gr).

Dr Vlahakis completed his PhD studies on analytical modeling of
cosmic winds and jets at the Univ. of Crete in Heraklion, under the
supervision of Prof. K. Tsinganos. His name had been proposed for last
year's "Best Ph.D. Award" but eventually was not considered, as he was
