1. Short News

The fifth annual ESAC Data Analysis and Statistics (EDAS) workshop at ESA center, Madrid, will take place on October 8 to 11, 2018. Details can be found here or contact Ordinary Member Yannis Zouganelis.

We would like to congratulate Nick Kylafis, Emeritus Professor of a Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Crete and past President of our Society, for being elected at the Council of the European Astronomical Society (EAS) for the period 2018-2022. His extensive experience will help EAS in its ongoing efforts to increase its impact and services to European astronomers.

2.Retirement of prominent Hel.A.S. members
On September 1, 2018, two former members of the Governing Council (G.C.) of our society retired from their University faculty positions. These are: former President, K. Tsinganos (Athens), and former member of the Governing Council, V. Geroyannis (Patras).
On behalf of all Society members, the President and the G.C. would like to thank the above colleagues for their contribution to the Society and to the advancement of astronomy in Greece. Furthermore, we wish them a fruitful continuation of their creative work for many years to come.

3.ATTRACT call for proposals in partnership with ESO
ATTRACT is a new initiative that will bring Europe's fundamental research and industrial communities together, and which aims to foster the next generation of detection and imaging technologies. The European Southern Observatory is a partner in the ATTRACT project. The call for ATTRACT opened on 1 August 2018, and applicants (organizations) have to submit their concept notes by 31 October at 23:59 CET.
The total funding for projects is €17 million, with €100 000 of seed funding for each selected project. This funding comes from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. More information can be found here

4. Student and Postdoctoral Research Opportunities Abroad
The list below may be refreshed or updated with further established lists:
  • Physical Science Research Scientist Position in Solar Magnetic Field Research at Stanford University. The Solar Observatories Group at Stanford University invites applications for a Physical Science - Research Scientist.
The position focuses on the investigation of the magnetic field in the solar atmosphere and its influence on the corona and heliosphere. The successful candidate will focus on analysis of vector magnetic field data from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) instrument on NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) along with data from other solar instruments. Information about the HMI project can be found at http://hmi.stanford.edu. A PhD or equivalent in astrophysics or a related field and experience with solar polarimetry and vector magnetic field data are required. Applicants who have experience with data analysis, can contribute to proposals for new research, have a strong publication record, and who have interest in working with students and in education and public outreach are preferred.
    To apply, please submit
    1) a cover letter describing your qualifications and
a brief statement of your research interests,
    2) a current C.V.,
    3) a list of your publications, and
    4) contact information for three references. PDF format is preferred.
Submissions should be sent to: Haruko Makitanimakitani@sun.standord.edu +1(650)723-1505
  • C. Robert and L. Drissen, Professors at the physics department of Laval University, City of Quebec, Canada, announce a new Master’s or Doctoral Project in Astrophysics. The project will analyze data from the SITELLE instrument, an imaging Fourier transform spectrometer installed at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope for the study of SIGNALS (Star formation, Ionized Gas, Nebular Abundances Legacy Survey with SITELLE).
Desired qualifications include an undergraduate degree in Physics, interest in observational astrophysics, knowledge of the Python programming language, and a good knowledge of French and English.
Required documents: cover letter, CV, official student transcript, and a letter of recommendation
For more information, contact C. Robert atcarobert@phys.ulaval.ca
  • ESA proposes postdoctoral Space Science fellowships, with a deadline on 1 October 2018. More infos could be found here. Questions can be addressed at: fellowship@cosmos.esa.int
  • AHEAD school on 'X-ray and multiwavelength surveys, 19-23 November 2018, MPE Garching. The School aims at providing young astronomers with the specific theoretical and practical skills to successfully exploit the current and future generation of large surveys. We will include in-depth discussions of both high-energy experiments and multi-wavelength surveys across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. To this end, world class experts in several fields will deliver lectures and conduct hands-on sessions, including analysis of real catalogs data. Students will have the opportunity to interact with renowned scientists in a high motivating environment. More information can be found here.
Any Member of the Society who wishes to contribute another credible link with opportunities, or individual opportunities that will, however, be shown in a single-liner format as above, is encouraged to contact the Secretary of the Society.
