| 1. Short News |
|
We would like to congratulate Ms. Vasileia Aspasia Masoura, who recently defended successfully her PhD at the University of Thessaloniki. Her thesis was entitled "The coevolution of the AGNs and their host galaxies" and it was completed under the supervision of Dr. I. Georgantopoulos and Prof. M. Plionis. The Society extends its best wishes for further success in her professional pursuits.
We would like to congratulate Mr. Achilles Strantzalis, who recently defended successfully his PhD at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. His thesis was entitled "Study of the stellar and cluster populations in the central regions of the Small Magellanic Cloud" and it was completed under the supervision of Prof. Despina Hatzidimitriou. The Society extends its best wishes for further success in his professional pursuits.
We would like to congratulate Dr. Zoi Spetsieri, a member of Hel.A.S, who was selected to work on the ERC Starting Grant project “H1PStars” (PI: Dr. Anderson), at the Laboratory of Astrophysics, of the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. Dr. Spetsieri will start this 3-year position on July 1, 2021.

| 2. Upcoming 15th Conference of Hel.A.S. |
|
All members are encouraged to register and submit their abstracts for the upcoming 15th Conference of HelAS. The deadline of abstract submission is just a month away, on April 30, 2021. As it was mentioned already in our previous newsletter, due to the restrictions associated with the covid pandemic, the conference will take place virtually, with a minimal registration fee.

| 3. Emilios Harlaftis best PhD prize |
|
The Governing Council studied carefully the applications of the candidates and choose George Valogiannis (PhD 2020 Cornell Univ., USA), currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Dept. of Physics of Harvard University (USA), for the "Emilos Harlaftis Best PhD award of 2021". His PhD thesis was entitled "Testing gravity with cosmology: efficient simulations, novel statistics and analytical approaches". The GC was very pleased to notice the high quality of the research conducted by all candidates and it would like to congratulate all of them for the scientific results they obtained during the short amount time of a PhD thesis.

| 4. Early-career Seminars of HelAS. |
|
Motivated by the Monthly Colloquium of HelAS, the GS decided to also support the “Early-career Seminars of HelAS”, an idea proposed by a group of junior members of the Society. The goal is that a group of early-career members of the Society organize, on a regular basis and under the auspices of HelAS, virtual talks. Junior member of the Society and postdoctoral researchers up to two years from their thesis defense will be encouraged to present their work, so that they obtain valuable experience, talking in front of an audience. Moreover, everyone in our community will have the chance to hear about the latest research of the next generation of our scientists. Those interested to participate in this effort are invited to fill in the following form:

| 5. Facilitating the networking between members |
|
The Governing Council of our Society, responding to requests it received, is planning to explore an action which is expected to facilitate the networking between members of our Society who are in the early stages of their career and are in between academic positions. A dedicated space in the web page of Hel.A.S. will be created, in which we will present a list with the names of our members (including a link to their CV) who wish to take advantage of this opportunity. In this manner other members of the Society who have funded projects and wish to recruit people will have an easy access to a list of scientists that may be available. Any member who wishes to explore this opportunity is requested to contact the Secretary.

6. ESA Archival Research Visitor Programme (Deadline 30 April 2021)

"The Solar Orbiter mission — Exploring the Sun and heliosphere"

Abstract: Solar Orbiter, launched on 10 February 2020, is a space mission of international collaboration between ESA and NASA. It is exploring the linkage between the Sun and the heliosphere and has started to collect unique data at solar distances down to 0.49 AU. By ultimately approaching as close as 0.28 AU, Solar Orbiter will view the Sun with very high spatial resolution and combine this with in-situ measurements of the surrounding heliosphere. Over the course of the mission, the highly elliptical orbit will get progressively more inclined to the ecliptic plane. Thanks to this new perspective, Solar Orbiter will deliver images and comprehensive data of the unexplored Sun’s polar regions and the side of the Sun not visible from Earth. This talk will provide an overview of the Solar Orbiter mission and highlight its first science results.
