1. Short News

The Society wishes to remind its Junior Members of the December 15 travel grant deadline for meeting trips planned for the first half of 2022. Notice that every PhD student and every meeting (Conference, Workshop or School) is eligible for partial reimbursement of expenses, provided that the meeting is deemed paramount for the completion of the student's PhD Thesis.

Recently, our colleague and member of our Society, Prof. Father Georgios Anagnostopoulos retired from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Democretus University of Thrace. The Society would like to thank Prof. Anagnostopoulos for his contribution to the advancement of astronomy in Greece. Furthermore, we wish him a fruitful continuation of his creative work for many years to come.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Juxhin Zhuleku, who has recently moved to the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences for a post-doctoral position. The Society extends its best wishes for further success in his professional pursuits.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Rocio Paez, who has recently moved to the Centre for Unified Computing CUC at University College Cork, in Cork, Ireland, for a post-doctoral position. The Society extends its best wishes for further success in her professional pursuits.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Georgios Dimitriadis, who has recently moved from the University of California Santa Cruz (USA), to the School of Physics of the Trinity College Dublin, for a post-doctoral position. The Society extends its best wishes for further success in his professional pursuits.

The American Astronomical Society journals will switch to fully open access (OA) as of 1 January 2022. The transition will affect the Astronomical Journal (AJ), the Astrophysical Journal (ApJ), Astrophysical Journal Letters (ApJL), and the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series (ApJS); the Planetary Science Journal. For more information see here.

The journal Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A) announced that it will move to a Subscribe-to-Open (S2O) model. If libraries renew their subscriptions, A&A will be published in full open access in 2022 will switch to fully open access (OA) as of 1 January 2022. More information is available here.

The minutes of the 12th meeting of the current Governing Council of HelAS, which took place on October 5, 2021, are available here.

2. Hel.A.S. Annual Membership Fee

We would like to remind all members of the Society, that the deadline for the payment of the annual membership fee for the year 2021 was August 31st. If your are uncertain about your payment status please contact the Secretary of the Society. Members with two or more years of outstanding membership fees have been contacted directly by the Secretary as required by the Constitution of the Society.

The preferred method of payment is using a credit card via the secure server of the Bank of Pireaus. For more details on this, as well as information on other methods of payment, please review the payment form, or contact the Treasurer.

3. Two new positions at the RCAAM/Academy of Athens

The Research Center for Astronomy and Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Athens invites applications for:
1) A position at the rank of Associate Researcher in the field of Computational Astrophysics.
2) A position at the rank of Assistant Researcher in the field of Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamics .
Deadline: December 19, 2021, 23:59UT.

4. Webpage "2 minute science"

We are excited to inform all members of our Society about an initiative of a group of, mostly junior, members of HeAS to share their enthusiasm and astronomy knowledge with the public. The group created a new web page, in greek, entitled "2 Minute Science", which provides answers to questions the public poses, as well as short articles on timely astronomy topics. The Governing Council of HelAS supported this initiative and would like to congratulate the new generation of Greek astronomers for making it a reality. We anticipate that the impact of this effort down the road will be substantial. For more information visit the web page: https://2science.gr

5. The IAU PhD prize application is open

The IAU is inviting applications for its 2021 PhD prize. Each IAU Division has, once a year, the opportunity to award its own prize to the candidate. Details for the application requirements are available here and the application form is here. The deadline for all applications is December 15.

6. Astronomy & Astrophysics Awards 2022

The Board of Directors of A&A attributes two yearly awards, the A&A Best PhD Thesis Award and the A&A Early Career Award, for outstanding research published in A&A by individuals in the initial stages of their careers. With these two awards, the Board wishes to express its appreciation, and contribute to the enthusiasm, of the new generation of researchers who will be shaping astronomy for the decades to come. More information of the awards are available here and the application deadline is 15 November 2021.

7. The ”Hel.A.S. NextGen Seminar Series” is looking for speakers!

This fall, a new seminar series is starting, supported by young Hel.A.S. members. The seminars are aimed to encourage junior members of the Society and postdoctoral researchers to present their work obtaining valuable experience talking in front of an audience. All members interested to present their results are encouraged to do it here.
For more information visit the dedicated webpage or send an e-mail to nextgen.helas@gmail.com. To increase the interactions around this event you may also join its Slack channel .

8. Post-doctoral position at IAASARS/NOA

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position at the Institute of Astronomy Astrophysics Space Applications and Remote Sensing (IAASARS) of the National Observatory of Athens (NOA). The successful applicant will closely collaborate with the X-ray group of the IAASARS (Dr. Akylas, Dr. Georgantopoulos, Dr. Georgakakis) to develop novel tools, largely based on Artificial Intelligence algorithms, that will generate value-added products (e.g. photometric redshifts, upper limits, classifications) for the 4XMM serendipitous source catalogue. The scientific exploitation of these products will also be part of the contract. For more information and application details see here.

9. Astronomy Seminars in Greece

We would like to remind all members of the Society that there is a web page presenting the astrophysics and space physics seminars organised in Greece by groups in various universities and research institutes. Since many of those seminars are now broadcasted live this may facilitate our members, as well as scientists across Greece and abroad, to attend them. For more information visit:

https://helas.gr/seminars.php

Moreover, if you wish to have the seminars of your institute included in the calendar, please contact the Secretary of the Society.

10. Monthly Colloquium of Hel.A.S.

We are happy to announce that the November 2021 colloquium speaker is Prof. Georgios Magdis. As usual, videos of all past colloquia are available in the Youtube channel of the Society. Details of the upcoming colloquium follow:

Abstract: Galaxies are the building blocks of our Universe and the messengers of our cosmic origins: they serve as cosmic beacons pinpointing the sites of the dark matter that surrounds them, they unfold the adventurous star formation history of the Universe, they echo the processes that shaped the structure of our Cosmos today.
We are at the tipping point in the history of astrophysics where capturing and studying galaxies at ever increasing distance and detail is now possible. Indeed, an impressive array of flagship astronomical facilities is progressively becoming available, ready to harvest the full electromagnetic spectrum and paint a holistic picture of ~13.7 billion years of star birth, heavy element production and galactic life-cycle.
In this seminar I will attempt to follow this journey of galaxy evolution across cosmic time. In the first part I will provide an overview of the current “standard-model” of galaxy evolution that has pioneered the way we understand how galaxies form, grow and eventually die during the last 80% of cosmic history. Then I will focus on the initial 20% of cosmic time where the census and the nature of galaxies still remain largely uncharted. I will discuss how this period that signifies the onset of galaxy evolution is now becoming tangible, and I will present ongoing efforts and future directions that will push our exploration into the last observable frontier; the epoch of cosmic dawn.
