1. Short News

The GC wishes to all members of Hel.A.S. a Happy, Healthy and Productive NEW YEAR 2023!

We would like to congratulate Dr. Eva Ntormousi who was recently elected as tenure researcher at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, in Italy. The Society extends its best wishes for further success in her professional pursuits.

We would like to congratulate Constantina M. Fotopoulou who has recently successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled "The multiphase interstellar medium in a high resolution simulation of a dwarf starburst " at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Munich under the supervision of  Dr. Thorsten Naab and Prof. Dr. Volker Springel.  The Society extends its best wishes for further success in her professional pursuits.

2. Job opportunities in Greece

One (1) PhD or one (1) post-doctoral position on high-energy astrophysics at the Department of Physics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens will be announced in the upcoming months. The position will be funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) scheme under the grant entitled "ASTRAPE" with PI Dr. Georgios Vasilopoulos. The selected candidate will work on topics related to extreme accretion in X-ray binaries and Ultra luminous X-ray sources under the supervision of the PI and in collaboration with international researchers. Expected starting date is between February-April 2023, for a duration of up to 24 months. For the PhD position, applicants should hold a masters degree in Astrophysics or to graduate early in 2023. Depending on the available candidates the position could be also offered on a post-doctoral level. Interested parties should contact Dr. Vasilopoulos () for more details.

One (1) post-doctoral position on high-energy computational astrophysics at the Department of Physics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens will be announced in the upcoming months. The position will be funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) scheme under the grant entitled "UNTRAPHOB" with PI Prof. Maria Petropoulou. The selected candidate will work on code development and modeling of multi-messenger emission from relativistic jets in collaboration with international researchers. He/she will also be involved in the mentoring of PhD and MSc students working on the project. Interested parties should contact Prof. Petropoulou (mpetropo@phys.uoa.gr) for more details.

3. The 16th Conference of HelAS.

We would like to inform all members that the 16th Conference of HelAS, which will take place in Athens from 25-28 of June 2023. The statues and application procedure of the award remain as in the past.

Applications for the "2023 Best PhD thesis Prize - Emilios Harlaftis" are now open. They are restricted to Junior members of the Society, who have successfully defended their Ph.D. thesis between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2022. The application deadline is January 31, 2023. Abstract: The magnetic field is one of the most elusive components of the interstellar medium. It affects galactic processes on a wide range of scales: from the formation of stars to the launching of galactic outflows. Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in observations of the magnetic field in our own Galaxy and beyond. Ground-based and orbital experiments from the optical to the radio have generated datasets of unprecedented variety and volume, that probe the magnetic field. Drawing from this wealth of studies in the recent decade, I will summarize key insights about the nature of the magnetized ISM. I will also discuss exciting future prospects enabled by new observational surveys - with emphasis on mapping the Milky Way's magnetic field in three dimensions.
