1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
Due to a minor miscommunication the affiliations of two recently elected
Hel.A.S members were misquoted in the previous newsletter. Mr Akylas is
a student at the Univ. of Athens and Dr. Boumis is research associate
at the Univ. of Crete. Details on the affiliation and address of all
new members can be found in the online directory of the Society.

A new web page with links to several sites advertising astronomy
jobs has been added to the web server of Hel.A.S. To view it select
the "Astronomy Resources" page and click on the link "Astronomy Job
Openings" found near the top of that page.
2. THE NEW OFFICERS of HEL.A.S.
------------------------------
The newly elected Governing Council of Hel.A.S. convened on July 3rd
and appointed the officers of the Society for the term 2000-2002.
These are:
President : J.H. Seiradakis, University of Thessaloniki
Vice-President : N. Kylafis, University of Crete
Secretary : H. Varvoglis, University of Thessaloniki
Treasurer : P. Niarchos, University of Athens
Members : S. Avgoloupis, University of Thessaloniki

3. NEW EDITOR OF HIPPARCHOS
---------------------------
After four years of service Dr. Xenophon Moussas has stepped down
as editor of Hipparchos. On behalf of all members the Governing
Council would like to thank him for the time and effort he devoted to it.
A new editor, Dr. Manolis Plionis of the NOA (mplionis@astro.noa.gr),
was appointed during the last meeting of the Governing Council. Please
consider submitting any news, articles etc. for the upcoming issue
of Hipparchos to him.
4. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
---------------------------
Dr. Paul Kalas has recently moved from Space Telescope Science
Institute (MD, USA) to a new postdoctoral fellowship position at the
Astronomy Department of the University of California at Berkeley.
Dr. Konstantinos Pavlakis has recently moved from the University of
Leeds, (U.K.) to a new postdoctoral fellowship position in the
Department of Physics at the University of Crete.
5. VISITING FELLOWSHIPS FOR PHD STUDENTS
----------------------------------------
The European Association for Research in Astronomy (EARA) has been
designated by the EU as a joint Marie Curie Training Site, offering
fellowships for postgraduate students working on several theoretical and
observational areas in astronomy. The institutes involved are the
Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge (United Kingdom), Leiden
Observatory (The Netherlands), the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris
(France), the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Astrophysik in Garching
(Germany), and the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (Spain).
A call for applications of PhD candidates who will spend 3 to 12
months at one of the above EARA institutes during which they will
continue their Ph.D research work under the supervision of local
staff members has been announced. For more information visit:
