1. Short News |
We would like to congratulate Mr. Evangelos-Dimitrios Paspaliaris who has recently successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled "Stellar populations and the properties of ISM in non-typical local galaxies" at the Dept. of Physics of the Univ. of Thessaloniki, under the supervision of Dr. Manolis Xilouris of IAASARS/NOA. Mr Paspaliaris has also been awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at the Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri (Italy) and will be moving there soon. The Society extends its best wishes for further success in his professional pursuits.
We would like to congratulate Dr. Tanio Diaz-Santos who was recently promoted to Senior Researcher (Researcher B') at the Institute of Astrophysics - FORTH. The Society extends its best wishes for further success in his professional pursuits.

4. Two (2) ERC Starting Grants awarded at IA-FORTH |
The Institute of Astrophysics - FORTH is excited to announce that two ordinary members of HelAS have been awarded an ERC Starting Grant having IA-FORTH as their host institution.
Dr. Maria Charisi has been awarded 1.9MEuros under the ERC StG 2023 call, for her project entitled "MMMonsters: The first multi-messenger detection of a supermassive black hole binary". The project aims to combine gravitational wave detections from Pulsar Timing Arrays with quasar variability from the Very Rubin Observatory to identify for the first time the exact location of the source of low frequency gravitational waves emitted by binary supermassive black holes located at the centers of quasars.
Dr. Yannis Liodakis has been awarded 1.5MEuros under the ERC StG 2022 call, for his project entitled "BOOTES: Black hOle Optical-polarization TimE-domain Survey". The project aims to combine new optical polarisation measurements of accreting supermassive black holes mainly from Skinakas Observatory with other ground based and space observations, to systematically study tidal disruption events and relativistic jets to improve our understanding on the mechanism of accretion disk, jet formation and particle acceleration.
The Society extends their warmest congratulations to the two members and wish the best for the successful completion of their exciting projects.

5. The 2023 Nick Kylafis Lecture |
The Institute of Astrophysics - FORTH is happy to announce that the 2023 Nick Kylafis Lecturer, Prof. Steven Balbus, will present his lecture entitled "Understanding black holes from stars destroyed by tidal forces", on Thursday October 19, 2022 @14:00 (UTC +3:00). The lecture will be streamed via ZOOM and details are available in the lecture page.
The “Nick Kylafis Lectureship” was established in 2019 in order to honor Nick Kylafis, Professor Emeritus at the Dept. of Physics of the Univ. of Crete and past President of Hel.A.S., on the occasion of his 70th birthday, for his 35 years of scientific contributions and leadership towards the founding and continuous improvement of the astrophysics group at the University of Crete and FORTH. This lifelong commitment has been instrumental in the international recognition of the research activities of the Crete astrophysics group, which led to the creation of the Institute of Astrophysics at FORTH in 2018. Under the auspices of the Lectureship, one distinguished theoretical astrophysicist is invited annually at FORTH for a brief visit.
