1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
The next issue of Hipparchos will be published by the end of
February. Please consider submitting any news, articles etc. you
have on time. For more information please contact the editor,

2. GREECE JOINS ESA
-------------------
Greece has become an official member of the European Space Agency
(ESA), following a preliminary cooperation agreement signed by Development
Minister Nikos Christodoulakis. A full membership agreement is foreseen
within the next 2-3 years.
According to the Minister, Greece's membership will not be limited to
academic issues, but, rather, its participation will be focusing on
scientific and research matters, as well as on effectively utilizing
space technology.
3. I.K.Y. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2001
-------------------------------
The National Scholarship Foundation (I.K.Y.) plans to announce the
2001 programme for graduate student scholarships and postdoc positions in
Astronomy by the end of February. The written examinations for the graduate
student scholarships are expected to take place in Athens (Arsakeion School
at Psychiko) some time in May. The next newsletter will contain further
information.
4. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
---------------------------
Dr. Evanthia Hatziminaoglou recently moved to a visiting scientist
position at the EIS (ESO Imagning Survey) project in Munich, Germany.
5. THE SECOND NEON OBSERVING SCHOOL
-----------------------------------
The Network of European Observatories in the North (NEON) organizes
an observational Euro summer school sponsored by the European Community.
The purpose of the school (Jyly 9-21, 2001) is to provide opportunity to
gain practical observational experience at the telescope, in observatories
with state-of-the-art instrumentation.
The school is open to students working on a PhD thesis in Astronomy and
which are nationals of a Member State or an Associated State of the European
Union. The working language is English. Up to fifteen participants will be
selected by the Organising Committee and will have their travel and living
expenses paid, if they satisfy the EC rules (age limit of 35 years at the
time of the Euro Summer School). The application deadline is March 31, 2001.

6. THE INTERNATIONAL MAX-PLANK RESEARCH SCHOOL ON ASTROPHYSICS
--------------------------------------------------------------
The International Max-Planck Research School on Astrophysics
(IMPRS) is a Graduate School which offers a PhD program in Astrophysics
and Cosmology. The partrners of the School are:
* The Max-Planck Institute for extraterrestrial Physics (MPE)
* The Observatory of the University of Munich (LMU/USM)
* The Max-Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA)
* The European Southern Observatory (ESO)
* The Astro-particle Physics group of the Technical University of Munich
* The Werner-Heisenberg Institute for Physics
The first academic year starts on September 1, 2001. The review of
applications starts on April 1, 2001. All successful applicants are
supported by a PhD fellowship if required. For more information please
