1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
We would like to congratulate our colleague, Dr. Vassilis
Angelopoulos, who was awarded the COSPAR Zeldovich Medal, Scientific
Commission D, for the year 2000, as a recognition for his work on
the terrestrial magnetotail. Dr. Angelopoulos was also selected this
year as a Macelwane Medalist by the American Geophysical Union. This
last medal recognizes significant contributions to the geophysical
and space sciences by an outstanding young scientist (less than 36
years of age).
On Monday and Tuesday, March 5 and 6, a workshop entitled "New
co-operation agreement between the government of the Hellenic Republic
and the European Space Agency (ESA) for Peaceful Purposes: Opportunites"
will be held in the Hotel Caravel. All Hel.A.S. members, who feel that their
research activites might fall whithin the agreement's scope, are
encouraged to participate.
The latest issue of Hipparchos has been sent to all members and
it is also available as a PDF file in the web server of Hel.A.S.
2. NEW PHONE NUMBERS IN THE UNIV. OF ATHENS
-------------------------------------------
We were recently informed that there have been several changes in
the phone system at the Physics Department of the Univ. of Athens.
Consequently all phone numbers of Hel.A.S. members associated with
this institute of the type "7274???" have been changed to "7276???".
We took the liberty to update the on-line records of all affected
members accordingly. Furthermore, phone numbers of the type "723????"
and "724????" are still functioning but they will soon be phased out.
We would greatly appreciate if all members of Hel.A.S. associated
with the Univ. of Athens visit the on-line web directory of the
society at:
http://www.hri.org/elaset/dir-cover.html
and inspect the information displayed in their record. Please send
by e-mail any corrections you may have to the secretary of Hel.A.S.
Prof. Harry Varvoglis (varvogli@astro.auth.gr)

in Spain will concentrate on single dish mm-astronomy.
Applications will be accepted from young scientists with little
previous experience in mm-astronomy. The course is limited to 30
students, who will be selected on the basis of their CV and
references. Financial support for travel and lodging for young
researchers might become available.
