1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
Professors J. Ventura (University. of Crete) and K. Tsinganos
(University of Athens) resigned from their positions as member and
substitute member (respectively) of the Greek National Committee for
Astronomy.
2. THE 5TH HELLENIC ASTRONOMICAL CONFERENCE
-------------------------------------------
As you already know, between September 20 and 22, Hel.A.S. organised
the 5th Hellenic Astronomical Conference at the Fodele Beach Hotel, near
Heraklio, Crete. From the 140 colleagues that had pre-registered, 108
(from Greece and other 10 countries) were able to to finally attend the
meeting. Unfortunately, due to the tragic events in New York, almost all
our colleagues from U.S. were not able to participate.
At the beginning of the Conference Professor Goudis, the newly appointed
Director of the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics of the National
Observatory of Athens, gave a short account of the latest information on
the progress of the new "Aristarchos" telescope.
During the Conference 150 "Contributed", 9 "Session Main" and 4
"Invited" papers were presented. The "Invited", "Session Main"
and "Contributed" papers were distributed among various fields as follows:
-Dynamical Astronomy (-, 1, 10)
-Solar, Planetary and Space Physics (1, 2, 36)
-Stellar Astrophysics (1, 1, 28)
-Our Galaxy and other galaxies (- , 1, 14)
-High Energy Astrophysics (-, 1, 13)
-Cosmology and Relativity (1, 1, 11)
-Observational Astronomy (-, 2, 17)
-Infrastracture, History and Teaching of Astronomy (1, -, 21)
During the Conference, the awards for the "Best PhD in Astronomy
among the junior members of HEL.A.S." for the years 1999 and 2000 were
presented, respectively, to Drs. E. Xilouris (University of Crete) and
S. Basilakos (Imperial College). Dr. Xilouris gave a talk on "Dust lanes
in spiral galaxies" and Dr. Basilakos gave a talk on "Cold dark matter
with negative pressure".
