------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
In the list of the new members of Hel.A.S., which appeared in the
last Newsletter, the name of Evangelia Lyratzi was changed, due to a
typing error, to Evaggelos Lyratzis. We would like to apologise for
this mistake.
2. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
---------------------------
Dr. Konstantinos Dimopoulos recently left the Univ. de Valencia
(Spain), for a new postdoc position at the Univ. of Lancaster (U.K.).
3. EURO WINTER SCHOOL: OBSERVING WITH THE VLT INTERFEROMETER
------------------------------------------------------------
The European Southern Observatory (ESO) will start operating the Very
Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) in 2003. The objectives of the
school are (a) to give the basics of interferometry and (b) to provide
practical training on the most important tools for interferometric
observations.
The school will take place at the Centre de Physique des Houches, in
France, from 3 to 8 February, 2002. The school is open to participants of
any country. Housing and travel are expected to be covered by the organisers.
The deadline for applications is November 30, 2001. For more information
visit:
http://www-laog.obs.ujf-grenoble.fr/~jmmc/obsvlti/
4. REPORT ON GREEK PROSPECTS IN ASTRONOMY FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
--------------------------------------------------------------
In the fall of 1997 the Greek National Committee for Astronomy,
through its President Dr. Evangelos Kontizas, appointed an External
Committee to investigate and report on the possible directions of the
Astronomical Sciences in the 21st century in Greece. The report of
the committee, chaired by professor Yervant Terzian (Cornell Univ.),
was made public in a meeting organized in late 1998 at the National
Observatory of Athens.
As it is possible that several of the newest members of
Hel.A.S. have not yet had a chance to read the recommendations of
the Terzian Committee, we would like to let you know that the
report can be found in the web-page of the Greek National Committee for
Astronomy, at:
http://www.astro.noa.gr/gnca/ca-report2000.htm
