1. THE 6th HELLENIC ASTRONOMICAL CONFERENCE
-------------------------------------------
We remind our members that the deadline for submitting contributions to
the convenors of the corresponding session of the 6th Hellenic Astronomical
Conference (15 - 17 of September 2003 at the facilities of the National
Observatory of Athens in Palaia Penteli) is May 31, 2003. You may register

We note that the following two internationally distinguished Hel.A.S.
invited speakers have confirmed their participation :
- E.N. Parker (Univ. of Chicago, USA) who will speak on "Magnetohydrodynamic
discontinuities and the formation of X-ray coronae in astrophysics".
- P. Grosbol (ESO, Germany) who will speak on
"What can we learn from near-infrared observations of spiral galaxies?"
2. SHORT NEWS
-------------
Recently we learned that Aris Karastergiou, a member of our
Society, received the prestigious "Otto Hahn Prize" in the field of
"Chemistry, Physics and Technology". After obtaining his Degree in
Physics from the University of Thessaloniki, Aris received his Ph.D.
in Astronomy, for his research on Pulsars, working at the
Max-Planck-Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, Germany.
The "Otto Hahn Medal" is awarded to young researchers by the Max
Planck Society for their outstanding scientific achievement. In addition
to a generous grant, the award fully supports the recipients to carry
their research abroad for one year to a country and institution of their
choice.
3. JOB OPENING
--------------
A new tenure-track position at the level of "Assistant Professor"
in the field of "Observational Astrophysics" has opened in the
Department of Physics of the University of Crete. The deadline
for applications is May 21st, 2003 For more information you may contact

4. BELATED GREEK DUES TO ASTRONOMY & ASTROPHYSICS
-------------------------------------------------
Many members of Hel.A.S publish their research work at the
European Journal Astronomy and Astrophysics (A&A), which was created
in 1969 by the merging of the major European astronomical journals and
it has been established by now as the main European Astronomical
Journal. The Greek contribution to the publication costs of A&A is
3550 E, or 1.81% of the annual budget of A&A. With this arrangement
Greek astronomers can publish free of charge to A&A, while otherwise
they should pay 100 Euros per page. With a (growing) average
publication of 20 papers in A&A by Greek astronomers and a mean of 7
pages per publication, the cost would be 14000 E, if Greece was not a
member of A&A, i.e., four times larger than the current dues. Hence,
only for the financial point of view, the participation of Greece to
A&A is beneficial.
Unfortunately, for a third consecutive year (dues of the years 2001,
2002, 2003), the General Secretariat for Research & Technology of the
Greek Ministry of Development has not paid the dues to A&A, despite
repeated calls by the Chairman of the Greek National Committee for
Astronomy (prof. J. Seiradakis) and the Greek representative to the
Board of Editors of A&A (prof. J. Ventura).
The subject matter becomes urgent also in view of the fact that the
next meeting of the Board of Editors of A&A will convene for the first
time in Greece (May 10th, Crete). We all should intensify our calls to
the administration officials in order to fulfill our current
obligations to A&A by May 10th and to initiate arrangements for a more
efficient method of payment in the future.
