1. PROCEEDINGS OF THE 6th HELLENIC ASTRONOMICAL CONFERENCE

deadline for the submission of their contribution to the proceedings

2. JOB OPENINGS

- A new tenured track position at the level of "Assistant Professor"
or "Lecturer" in the field of "Astrophysics" has opened at the
Department of Physics of the University of Thessaloniki. The
application deadline is November 10, 2003.

- A new research position (Ereynhths Gamma) has opened at the
National Center for Nuclear Studies "Democritos" on "Theory of
Nuclear reactions with emphasis on Nuclear Astrophysics". The

3. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
---------------------------
Dr. Kostas Dimopoulos recently moved from the Univ. of Lancaster
(UK) to a research associate position at the Institute of Nuclear
Physics at the National Research Center Demokritos in Athens.
Dr. MariLiza Koukouli recently moved from Oxford University (UK) to
a Marie Curie Fellowship position at the Instituto de Astrofisica de
Andalucia (Spain).
4. VISITING FELLOWSHIPS UNDER THE PROGRAM EARASTARGAL
-----------------------------------------------------
The European Association for Research in Astronomy (EARA) has been
designated by the EU as a joint Marie Curie Training Site, offering
fellowships for doctoral students working on several theoretical
and observational areas in astronomy. The institutes involved are the
Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge (United Kingdom), Leiden
Observatory (The Netherlands), the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris
(France), the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Astrophysik in Garching
(Germany), and the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (Spain).
A call for applications of PhD candidates who will spend 3 to 12
months at one of the above EARA institutes during which they will
continue their Ph.D research work under the supervision of local
staff members has been announced. For more information visit:

The deadline for applications is December 15, 2003.
5. FUNDING OF THE OPTICON ACCESS PROGRAM
----------------------------------------
The Access program submitted by Opticon to the EU has been
approved. The program provides access to a number of european 2-4m
class telescopes as well as travel support from the European Union to
proposals from astronomers not belonging to the nations owning a
given telescope (under usual EU rules). For more information visit:

Note that proposals will be judged on scientific merit only by the
Time Allocation Committees which already exist for each telescope
involved in this programme. There is no special OPTICON TAC. The
usual deadlines and application procedures for each telescope apply
and can usually be downloaded from their web-pages.
6. A CONFERENCE OF "IDISIEEP" ON THE OLYMPIC SPIRIT
---------------------------------------------------
The Institute for the International Cooperation of Greek Scientists
(or "IDISIEEP" following its Greek abbreviation) has as main goal to
promote the collaboration between Greek scientists, scientists of
Greek origin or descent worldwide, and personalities involved in
Greek studies.
In view of the forthcoming Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, the
Institute will organize in Thessaloniki, Greece, on December 5-7,
2003 a conference under the general title "The Influence of the
Olympic Spirit on Human Progress". This conference aims to gather
personalities, who play an important role in Science, Arts , and
Letters relevant to Greek matters. For more information view the

7. ASTRONOMY SEMINARS AT THE CITY OF CHALKIDA

9. ADDENDUM - NEW ORDINARY Hel.AS MEMBER
----------------------------------------
In the last General Assembly of Hel.AS, the Junior member of the
Society Dr Gewrgios Pantazhs moved to the Ordinary status, having
fulfilled the requirements described in the constitution. We regret
that Dr Pantazhs' name was omitted from the corresponding list of the
previous newsletter reporting the change in HelAS membership.
