1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
The proceedings of the 6th Hellenic Astronomical Conference which
took place in September 2003 in Penteli, Athens are now in press.
Their electronic version is available as a PDF file from:
http://www.astro.auth.gr/elaset/meetings.html
2. GREECE TO JOIN ESA BY NEXT YEAR
----------------------------------
In the course of its meeting in Kiruna (Sweden) on 24 and 25 March,
the ESA Council unanimously approved the application of the Hellenic
Republic of last October to join ESA. Greece is expected to become
full member of the Agency by December 1st, 2005, after the national
approval procedures have been completed. The official announcement
can be found at:
http://www.esa.int/export/esaCP/Pr_17_2004_p_EN.html
Greece has been granted observer status to attend meetings of ESA’s
Council and all its subordinate bodies, to enable it to familiarise
itself with the Agency’s procedures and working practices.
Greece became a preliminary member of ESA on January 17, 2001,
after a common agreement was signed by the General Director of ESA
and the Greek Minister of Development. The agreement anticipated a
collaboration between the two parties on a number of technological
issues (e.g. remote sensing, telecommunication, space technology,
etc).
ESA membership will allow Greek astronomers to submit proposals in the
framework of ESA science projects, on equal terms with colleagues from
the other ESA member countries. This is indeed good news for Greek space
research and astronomy in general and all efforts to achieve it should
be greatly appreciated. During the last years, the Greek National
Committee for Astronomy (GNCA) has actively pursued this target.
This was also one of the strong recommendations of the Astronomy in Greece
in the 21st Century, a report chaired by Y. Terzian in which several Greek
astronomers worked on and issued a few years ago.
3. FORTHCOMING ELECTIONS OF Hel.A.S
-----------------------------------
Please note the following related to the forthcoming elections of our
Society. Last week, the Council distributed the ballots along with
instructions on the voting procedures, agenda times, financial account
together with a summary of what has been accomplished during the term
of the present G.C. (Check your mailboxes...)
The ballots of members who would like to vote by ordinary mail must have
been received by the Secretary of Hel.A.S. by June 20, 2004.
June 21st, 2004, is the day of the General Assembly of Hel.A.S. at 1.30 pm
in the conference Hall of the Section of Astrophysics Astronomy and
Mechanics of the University of Athens, located in Panepistimioulis (Zografos).
According to article 32 of the constitution of Hel.A.S., a member must have
payed his/her annual membership fees in order to be eligible to vote.
All members are strongly encouraged to attend the General Assembly.
Members who will not be able to be in Athens on June 21st can still
vote by ordinary mail. Note, however, that the ballots must reach the
Secretary, Prof. Kanaris Tsinganos, before June 20th, 2004.

reached her decision yet. Please take this into account when voting.
