1. ANNOUNCEMENT OF HelAS INVITED TALK
-------------------------------------
On Monday June 21st, 2004 and prior to the General Assembly of
HelAS at 1.30 pm, prof. John Hadjidemetriou (University of
Thessaloniki)will speak at 12.00 in the conference Hall of the
Section of Astrophysics, Astronomy and Mechanics of the
University of Athens, located in Panepistimiopolis (Zografos), on
"The Dynamics of Extrasolar Planetary Systems".
You are invited to attend.
2. BALLOTS MAILED FOR FORTHCOMING ELECTIONS OF Hel.A.S
------------------------------------------------------
The Council distributed in the beginning of April to all
ordinary and junior HelAS members the ballots along with instructions
on the voting procedures, agenda times, financial account together
with a summary of what has been accomplished during the term of
the present G.C. The address for each member was written according
to the data base of Hel.A.S. If you have not received the envelope
with the ballots by now, it means that you have changed your
address and so please contact the secretary giving your new address.
3. OPTICON FUNDING FOR GREEK ASTRONOMERS
----------------------------------------
We would like to remind our readers that the OPTICON program
provides funding to Greek astronomers who wish to cover the cost of
observing programs using telescopes participating in the OPTICON
network. For more information please visit:
http://www.otri.iac.es/opticon/
and in particular the links to "Travel and subsistence grands" and
"Criteria of eligibility". Dr. Manolis Xilouris (NOA) was the first
Greek astronomer who was able to fund his observing trip to the
Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes in La Palma (Spain).
4. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
---------------------------
We would like to congratulate our member Dr. Dimitris Stamatellos for
completing his Ph.D. in Astrophysics at Cardiff University, Wales,
UK. His thesis was entitled "Monte Carlo radiative transfer in
prestellar cores and protostellar disks" and it is available online
at:
http://www.astro.cf.ac.uk/pub/Dimitrios.Stamatellos/phd.thesis
Dr. Stamatellos continues at Cardiff University as a Postdoctoral
Research Assistant on a 4-year PPARC fellowship.
5. FOURTH IRAM MILLIMETER INTERFEROMETRY SCHOOL
-----------------------------------------------
IRAM organizes this year its Fourth Millimeter Interferometry School.
The school will take place at the IRAM headquarters (Grenoble, France)
from November 22 to 27, 2004. The registration is open now. Please visit
the school's web site at
http://www.iram.fr/IRAMFR/IS/school.htm,
for more details. The deadline for registration is September 15.
The school is intended for PhD students, post-docs and scientists who
want to acquire a good knowledge of interferometry techniques at mm
wavelengths. In the same spirit as the previous three interferometry
schools, the courses will be focused on the Plateau de Bure Interferometer,
with an outlook to the next generation interferometer ALMA. Demonstration
sessions will help the participants to become familiar with the reduction
and imaging of Plateau de Bure data and the related technology. We would
like to encourage participants to present posters related to their scientific
work.
6. FINLAND JOINS ESO
--------------------
Finland with only ~25 observers but with expertise on sub-mm
detectors(i.e. ALMA) is joining ESO on July 1st, 2004. See more at
http://www.eso.org/outreach/press-rel/pr-2004/pr-02-04.html
The next candidate is Spain which also negotiates entrance to ESO.
7. BODOSSAKI FOUNDATION ACADEMIC PRIZES
---------------------------------------
The Bodossaki Foundation established in 1993 the "Bodossaki Foundation
Academic Prizes", awarded to scholars of Greek descent, under the age of
40 with Astrophysics beeing among the academic fields. The selection
of the prizewinners will be based on exceptional achievements in their
respective field. See more at
