  1. SHORT NEWS
  -------------

    We would like to congratulate Dr. Konstantinos Dimopoulos who was
  recently elected and moved to a tenure track faculty position of
  Lecturer in the Physics Department of Lancaster University (UK).

    We would like to congratulate Dr. Christos Tsagas (Univ. of
  Cambridge, UK) who was recently elected to an assistant professor
  position at the Dept. of Physics of the University of Thessaloniki.

    We congradulate Dr. Spyros Kitsionas, the recipient of a highly  
  competitive fellowship from the Mobility-5 Fellowship Programm, within   
  FP5, of the Eyropean Union (Intra European Fellowships). On this 
  occasion, Dr Kitsionas recently moved from the National Observatory 
  of Athens to the Astrophysikalisches Institut Potsdam (Germany).
 

  2. JOB OPENING
  --------------

    The procedure for opening a new tenure track position at the level
  of "Lecturer" in the field of "Dynamics" has been initiated at the
  Department of Physics of the University of Thessaloniki. The
  deadline for the applications has not been determined yet. More
  information will be provided in the web page of Hel.A.S. as well as
  in a future newsletter when it becomes available.


  3. NEW ISSUE OF IPPARCHOS
  -------------------------
  
    The 2004 issue of the Hel.A.S. edition IPPARCHOS is beeing 
  prepared by its new editor, Assoc.prof. K. Kokkotas. We would like 
  to urge all our members to send ASAP to Dr Kokkotas their news on 
  the research activities of their group, or Department, etc., which 
  took place recently, or are planned for the near future. 
  

  4. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
  ---------------------------

    Dr. Padelis Papadopoulos recently moved from the Space Science
  Department of ESA to a new 4-year postdoctoral fellowship at the
  Institut fur Astronomie, ETH, Zurich (Switzerland).

   
  5. THE SCIENCE CENTER AND TECHNOLOGY MUSEUM OF THESSALONIKI
  -----------------------------------------------------------

    On Wednesday, 27/10/2004, the Science Center and Technology Museum
  of Thessaloniki was inaugurated by the President of Democracy of
  Greece, K. Stephanopoulos. The Science Centre, built on a 49000 m2
  area at the suburb of Thermi, covers 4000 m2 of roofed facilities,
  including a "Planetarium", a "Large Format Theatre (IMAX)", a
  "Simulator" an "Auditorium" for 200 people, a large "Science and
  Technology Museum", a "Temporary Exhibition" area, "Food and
  Recreational" areas, a "Science Shop" and it is surrounded by an
  area dedicated to a "Techno Park". It will play an important role as
  an educational tool and a focus for public understanding of all
  sciences in northern Greece.

  6. THE INTERNATIONAL MAX-PLANK RESEARCH SCHOOL IN ASTROPHYSICS
  --------------------------------------------------------------

    For the 5th time, the International Max-Planck Research School on
  Astrophysics (IMPRS) is soliciting applications for its PhD program.
  Located in the beautiful Munich-Garching area in southern Bavaria
  (Germany), the school offers a unique environment for graduate
  students due to the presence of four internationally renowned
  institutes which form the school:

   * The Max-Planck Institute for extraterrestrial Physics (MPE)
   * The Observatory of the University of Munich (LMU/USM)
   * The Max-Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA)
   * The European Southern Observatory (ESO)

    Applications for the program are open to students from all
  countries.  More details on the IMPRS program and the admission
  requirements can be found at the IMPRS website

  The closing date for applications for the program starting in
  September 2005 is December 15, 2004. Please apply by using the IMPRS
  application form available online at

  7. JENAM 2005
  -------------

   The next Joint European and National Astronomy Meeting (JENAM 2005)
 will take place in LIEGE (Belgium), from July 4 to 8 with the general
 title: "Distant Worlds". The main topics proposed so fat are:
	- asteroseismology	  
	- massive luminous stars and high energy astrophysics
	- extragalactic astrophysics
	- high angular resolution and interferometry
	- astrobiology and solar system exploration

   For suggestions of other parallel sessions, contact the chairs of
 the SOC, J.P. Swings or H. Butcher.


  8. CALLS FOR PROPOSALS
  ----------------------

    NASA and The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) announced
  the Cycle 14 Call for Proposals for Hubble Space Telescope (HST)
  Observations and funding for Archival Research and Theoretical
  Research programs.  The proposal deadline is January 21, 2005. For
  more infromation visit:

    NASA and the Spitzer Science Center are opening the Cycle-2 Call
  for Proposals for the Spitzer Space Telescope in early November
  2005. Funding is available for Archival Research and Theoretical
  Research programs. The proposal deadline is February 12, 2005. For
  more infromation visit:

    Participation in these programs is open to all categories of
  organizations, both domestic and foreign, including educational
  institutions, profit and nonprofit organizations, NASA Centers, and
  other Government agencies.
