11. About this newsletter
1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
The online forum of the English Greek dictionary web page which
was announced in the electronic newsletter 80, has been frozen as
malicious commercial exploitation of the chat room by third parties
made its use impractical. We are exploring new and more secure avenues
before re-activating such a forum. A summary of the greek version of
most common / challenging words provided by J. Seiradakis and other
HelAS members is included in PDF format at [Greek2English/English2Greek]
of http://www.astro.auth.gr/elaset/greekdict/.
2. JOB OPENING
--------------
The procedure for opening a new tenure track position at the level
of "Lecturer" in the field of "Dynamics" has been initiated at the
Department of Physics of the University of Thessaloniki. The
deadline for the applications has not been determined yet. More
information will be provided in the web page of Hel.A.S. as well as
in a future newsletter when it becomes available.
3. MEMBER IN NEW POSITION
-------------------------
We would like to congratulate Dr. MariLiza Koukouli who completed
a Marie Curie Fellowship in the Institute of Astrophysics of
Andalusia, Granada, (Spain) and will be moving as of January 2005 to
a 15-month post-doctoral position at the Laboratory of Atmospheric
Physics of the Univ. of Thessaloniki.
4. NEW BOOK ON SPACE WEATHER
----------------------------
The book "Effects of Space Weather on Technology Infrastructure",
edited by Ioannis A. Daglis, National Observatory of Athens, has been
recently published by Springer/Kluwer Academic Publishers. It contains
the key lectures of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Effects of
Space Weather on Technology Infrastructure", which was held in Rhodes,
Greece, in March 2003. For a brief description of the book and a table
of contents you may use the link

5. POSTDOC POSITIONS UNDER THE "MAGPOP" EU NETWORK
--------------------------------------------------
As part of its current Research Training Network (RTN) program,
the European Commission has provided four year funding for a new
Research Network whose main objective is to use a wide range of
multi-wavelength survey data to quantify empirically how the stars
in galaxies were formed, how the heavy elements in galaxies were
produced and how black holes were assembled over the history of the
Universe. The network links the following eight astronomical
institutions with expertise in the construction and analysis of
galaxy surveys at different wavelengths, in stellar population
synthesis and modeling of galactic SEDs, and in the modeling of
galaxy formation in its full cosmological context.
--Max-Planck Institut fuer Astrophysik, Garching, Germany
--Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris, France
--Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille, France
--University of Nottingham, United Kingdom
--Universidad Computense de Madrid, Spain
--Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Italy
--Eotvos Lorand University of Budapest, Hungary
--Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA
As part of this program, four postdoctoral positions will be
available from the Summer 2005. The application deadline is December
30, 2004. For more information visit

6. THE IMPRS FOR ASTRONOMY AND COSMIC PHYSICS AT HEIDELBERG
-----------------------------------------------------------
The International Max-Planck Research School for Astronomy and
Cosmic Physics (IMPRS) at the University of Heidelberg, invites
applications for its Ph.D. program.
The school is located in Heidelberg (Germany), one of the
reknown old university towns in Europe and offers outstanding
research and training opportunities with excellent instrumental,
observational, and theoretical research facilities at five
first-rate institutes, namely
- the Max-Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA)
- the Max-Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics (MPIK)
- the Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (ITA)
- the Astronomisches Recheninstitut (I.f. Astronomical Computing, ARI)
- the Landessternwarte (State Observatory) Heidelberg (LSW).
The main research topics at these five institutions are: Planet
and star formation - extrasolar planets and substellar objects -
astrometry - formation, evolution and dynamics of galaxies - active
galactic nuclei and massive black holes - gravitational lensing -
cosmology and structure formation - high energy astrophysics, cosmic
rays and the search for non-baryonic dark matter - state-of-the-art
instrumentation for astronomy and astroparticle physics.
IMPRS Heidelberg is open for students from all countries and
offers several 3-year Ph.D. fellowships for both international and
national students. Interested students are invited to apply by 15
January 2005 for the academic year starting in September 2005. In
general, applicants should have a Masters or Diploma in Physics or
Astronomy (or equivalent) including a corresponding thesis. Successful
applicants will receive financial support through a PhD fellowship.

7. "COSMIC PATHWAYS": THE ONLINE JOURNAL OF IAA
-----------------------------------------------
"Cosmic Pathways", in Greek "KOSMIKES DIADROMES", is a journal
published online by the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics at
the National Observatory of Athens. Its main goal is to present
astronomy and astrophysics news and articles in Greek, in a non
technical level, which will be accessible by the general public with
interest in the area. To obtain more information on the journal, or
read news and past contributed articles visit the web site:
http://www.astro.noa.gr/journal/
You may also contact its editor, Dr. Manolis Plionis (IAA/NOA), using
the e-mail address of the journal (journal@astro.noa.gr) for more
information.
8. ESO/ESA/IAU CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATING ASTRONOMY TO THE PUBLIC
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The ESO/ESA/IAU Conference on Communicating Astronomy to the Public
(2005) is going to be held from Tuesday - Friday 14-17 June 2005 at the
European Southern Observatory Headquarters, Garching, Munich, Germany.
This conference aims to bring together the producers of astronomical
information (research scientists), public information officers (conne-
cted with large observatories and space missions), and mediators
(science reporters and writers, staff members from museums, planetariums).
Maximum attendance is 80-100 people, registration opens Tuesday Nov 16th
2004, and closes when the 50 available slots for non-invited speakers
have been taken. Final deadline for registration is 1st March 2005. Visit:
http://www.communicatingastronomy.org/cap2005/
