  3. EMILIOS HARLAFTIS (1965-2005)
  --------------------------------

Emilios Harlaftis, a member of our Society and one of the most
active astronomers in Greece, died in a tragic avalanche accident on
Mt. Menalon, in Peloponnese, on Sunday, February 13, 2005. He
graduated from the University of Athens in 1987. His scientific
activities were centered around Cataclysmic Variables and Compact
Stars, but he also worked on several technological projects. Since
1991, when he received his Ph.D. from Oxford, he undertook positions
in Spain (La Palma), England (St. Andrews) and Greece (NOA). He
worked in several Observatories, using medium and large telescopes
and has published numerous scientific papers. He has held a large
number of professional administrative posts (e.g. Greek National
Committee for Astronomy, OPTICON, COST, etc) promoting astronomy
both in Greece and abroad. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Marilena
Karabatea and two children. We shall always remember him for his
enthusiasm, valuable inspiration and eagerness to offer his
  assistance.

  4. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
