1. JOB OPENING
-------------
A new promotion-related position at the level of "Assistant
Professor" in the field of "Dynamics" has opened at the Department
of Physics of the University of Thessaloniki. We have only recently
learned that the deadline for the applications is Today, September 26,
2005. For more information contact the secretary of the Department at

2. THE 7th HELLENIC ASTRONOMY CONFERENCE
-------------------------------------------
As most of us already know, in the period September 8 - 11th, 2005
the Hel.A.S. organised with great success the 7th Hellenic Astronomy
Conference at Lixourion, Kefallinia.
From the 207 colleagues that had pre-registered and submitted more
than 180 papers, about 160 (from Greece and several other countries)
were able to finally attend the conference.
The HelAS invited speakers presented excellent review talks:
A. Ferrari on the Jet/Disk Paradigm, E. Priest on our Enigmatic Sun,
James Truran on Supernovae, Nucleosynthesis and Cosmic Chemical
Evolution, Keith Horne on Extra-Solar Planets, Mike Edmunds on
Understanding the Antikythera Mechanism - Real Progress through Joint
Greek/UK Research, Athena Coustenis on Titan and the Cassini-Huygens
mission.
The selected session main invited discourses were also characterized
by originality, while most of the contribution and posters were at
the cutting edge of research in modern Astronomy and Astrophysics.
Two Symposia took place, one on the Future of Greek Astronomy and the
other on Greece and the European Space Agency with representatives
from ESA, USA and the Greece/ESA Task Force.
Opening remarks were made by the HelAS President P. Laskaridis,
Academician G. Contopoulos, the Mayor of Lixourion and other local
representatives. The Local organisation was excellent, thanks to the
efforts of Dr. N. Solomos.
All in all, the 7th Hellenic Astronomical Conference was of equivalent
quality to the 6th and other well established international conferences.
We only hope that this trend continues in the future as well.
