1. SHORT NEWS

We would like to congratulate Dr. Helen Dara (Research Center for
Astronomy and Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Athens) who was
elected a member of the Board of the Solar Physics Section (SPS) of
the European Physical Society (EPS). K. Tsinganos served in the
SPS/EPS Board during the previous period 2001-2005. The elections
took place during the 11th European Solar Physics Meeting held in
Leuven, Belgium.
We would also like to congratulate Dr. Georgia Tsiropoula (National
Observatory of Athens) who was elected Secretary of the Board of the
Joint Organisation for Solar Observations (JOSO). H. Dara was the
previous Greek representative to JOSO. The elections took place
during the 11th European Solar Physics Meeting held in Leuven,
Belgium. The JOSO Board consists of 4 members: a President, two
Vice-Presidents and a Secretary.
We would also like to congratulate Prof. Mary Kontizas (Univ. of
Athens) who was nominated in the executive committee of the working
group "Women in Astronomy" created by the IAU :

2. ESA CALL FOR IDEAS AND RELATED INFO DAY IN ATHENS/THESSALONIKI
-----------------------------------------------------------------
A one day event is organized by the GSRT in oder to inform the Greek
community on opportunities related to the first ESA "Call for Ideas"
programm which is addressed to Greek Universities, Institutes and
Companies with Space activities. The deadline is the 6th of January,
2006. The info events will take place in Athens on Monday October 31st
2005, and in Thessaloniki on Monday Nov. 7, 2005.

3. JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE ESA/HERSCHEL MISSION
-------------------------------------------------
The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced immediate openings
for a number of positions for software engineers, including
individuals with Greek citizenship, extensive experience in Java,
Jython/Python under the Unix environment for the upcoming Herschel
Space Observatory mission. Herschel, the fourth "cornerstone"
mission in the ESA science programme, will be launched in 2007 and
it will perform photometry and spectroscopy in the 57-670micron
range. It will have a radiatively cooled 3.5 m diameter telescope,
and a science payload of three instruments housed inside a
superfluid helium cryostat. The potential employees will be based at
the ESA center in Villafranca (Spain) for an expected period of at
least three years.

4. RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS AT ESA/ACT
----------------------------------
The European Space Agency's Advanced Concepts Team (ACT) is
looking for highly motivated young researchers, with good
analytical and communication skills and excellent attitude towards
teamwork. Successful candidates for this position will be
responsible for the research activities of the Advanced Concepts
Team in the areas of Mission Analysis and System Design for a
maximum period of 1+1 years. Deadline for application submission

5. JOB OPENING

A new promotion-related position at the level of "Associate
Professor" in the field of "Observational Astrophysics" has opened
at the Department of Physics of the University of Crete. The

6. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
---------------------------
Dr. Christos Siopis recently moved from the University of
Michigan (USA) to a postdoctoral position related to the ESA Gaia
mission, at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium.
7. THE MARIOLOPOULOS TRUST FUND AWARD
-------------------------------------
The "Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental
Sciences" is a non-profit non-governmental Organization aiming at
promoting and awarding atmospheric environmental research. The "WMO
Professor Mariolopoulos Trust Fund Award", established by its board
of Directors under the auspices of the World Meteorological
Organization (WMO) of the UN, is granted every two years and
accompanied by a prize of US$ 2,000 and a certificate. The award is
granted for an outstanding research paper in atmospheric sciences
published or accepted during the last two years in a refereed
journal by a young scientist (age below 35 years by the date of
publication). The nomination deadline for this year is January 31st,
