1. FORTHCOMING ELECTIONS OF Hel.A.S.- G.C. NOMINATIONS OF CANDIDATES.

This coming June the General Assembly of HelAS will meet to elect
its officers for the period 2006-2008. Nominations for candidates of
the Governing Council can be sent to the Secretary of Hel.A.S. till

2. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
---------------------------
Dr. Yannis Papaphilippou recently moved to a staff accelerator
physicist position in the Accelerator and Beam Physics group of the
Accelerator and Beams division at CERN (CH).
Dr. Antonis Georgakakis has been awarded a Marie-Curie fellowship
to work at the Astrophysics Group of Imperial College London (UK)
on the origin of the X-ray Background and the link between AGN and
starburst activity.
3. GEORGIOS SURLANTZIS (1964-2006)
----------------------------------
Dr Georgios Surlantzis, who was in the process to become a member
of our Society, died in a tragic accident as he was climbing on Mt
Lasithi in Crete, together with other members of the climbing group
of Heraklion, on Saturday January 21, 2006. He graduated from the
University of Thessaloniki in 1991, obtained a PhD in Astrophysics
from the Univ. of Crete in 1995, has been a research fellow at the
Observatoire de Paris in Meudon, France (1992-1993) and the Univ. of
Strasbourg (1994) and was curently employed as a Researcher at the
Hellenic Center for Marine Research and the TEI of Heraklion, in Crete.
We shall always remember Giorgos for his sincere and friendly character
and enthusiasm for physics and theoretical astrophysics. He is survived
by his wife and four very young children. We inform those willing to
help his family, that his wife Katsioulh Theodora has the account
358/60728950 at the Commercial Bank of Greece (Emporiki Trapeza).
4. IUAPAP YOUNG SCIENTIST'S PRIZE IN ASTROPHYSICS
-------------------------------------------------
The Commission on Astrophysics of the International Union of Pure
and Applied Physics expects to present a prize to an outstanding
young astrophysicist in December, 2006 at the 23rd Texas Symposium
on Relativistic Astrophysics in Melbourne, Australia. Candidates
for the prize must not have completed more than 8 years of post-PhD
research and related activities at the time the prize is awarded.
The prize will consist of a IUPAP Medal, travel expenses to the
meeting where the prize is presented, and possibly a small cash
award. The winner will probably be asked to give a short talk about
the work for which the prize is awarded.
Nominations can come from any astrophysicist who knows the nominee's
work well. A nomination should consist of a letter explaining the
nominee's qualifications, a complete CV and list of publications, and
two letters of support, at least one of which must come from someone
who is not at the nominee's institution, is not a past mentor, and is
not a frequent co-author or other close collaborator. Materials must
arrive by 1 June 2006 for full consideration. Nominations should be
sent to the chair and the secretary of the Commission and to the chair

5. CASSINI POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AT THE ACADEMY OF ATHENS
---------------------------------------------------------
A position for a Post-doctoral research associate at the Academy
of Athens is still available effective as early as February 1, 2006.
The work involves analyses of data from the MIMI (Magnetospheric
Imaging Instrument) currently in orbit around Saturn. Information
about the MIMI investigation team can be found at

The position requires a PhD in space plasma physics, good
knowledge of magnetospheric physics, data analyses techniques, and
ability to present technical talks in English to international
scientific audiences. The work will be directed by Academician Stamatis
Krimizis who is Principal Investigator for the MIMI investigation.

contract via the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory,
and is for one year with possible renewals of up to three years.

7. CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR THE ISSI
----------------------------------
The International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern,
Switzerland, invites proposals from International Teams to conduct
on its premises study activities in space science (solar and solar
terrestrial science, geophysics, atmospheric science and climate,
planetary science, astrobiology, astrophysics and fundamental
physics), based on the analysis and evaluation of existing data from
several spacecraft and eventual integration with ground observations
and theoretical models. Teams would typically consist of about 8-12
members (some could have a few more and some less, to a minimum of
3) and assemble for two one-week meetings over a year. One Team
Leader will take the responsibility for the activity of the Team in
all its phases and will ensure the interface with ISSI.
The deadline for the letter of intent is February 18, 2006 while
the full proposals are due on March 18, 2006. Detailed information
