2. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
---------------------------
Dr. Charalampos Skokos recently moved from the Academy of Athens
to the Institut de Mecanique Celeste et de Calcul des Ephemerides of
Paris Observatory on a Marie-Curie fellowship.
3. IKY SCHOLARSHIPS
-------------------
The Greek National Institute of Fellowships (IKY) has announced
its graduate and post graduate fellowship program for 2006-2007.
The application deadline is March 10th, 2006. There are 3 positions
for graduate studies abroad (1 in Astronomy, 1 in Cosmology & Theory
of General Relativity, 1 in Space Physics) and two positions for
graduate studies in Greece (1 in Astrophysics & 1 Space Physics).
These are good news for Astrophysics/Astronomy because this year we
got an extra position for graduate studies abroad (Space Physics)
compared to last year, taking into account that IKY reduced this
year the total number of its fellowships. For more information
visit:

4. AAS INTERNATIONAL AFFILIATE MEMBERS
--------------------------------------
The American Astronomical Society (AAS) introduced this year a new
membership class. It is the "International Affiliate Member" which
is to astronomers or scientists in closely related fields who do not
reside in the United States. Applicants require either nomination by
an active Full Member of the AAS or must be members of an affiliated
society that requires nomination for membership. For more
information and application forms visit:

and

5. RESEARCH GRANTS IN FRANCE
----------------------------
CNES ( National Centre for Spaces Studies) awards research grants
once a year to grantees working in engineering sciences (orbital and
space transport systems) and sciences using space assets (Universe,
Earth and microgravity sciences). Grants are awarded for:
* Doctoral theses at a research laboratory in France
* Post-doctoral research at a laboratory in France

5. SPAIN IS JOINING ESO
-----------------------
During a ceremony in Madrid on Monday 13 February 2006, an
agreement was signed by the Spanish Minister of Education and
Science, Mrs. Maria Jesus San Segundo, and the European Southern
Following approval by the Spanish Council of Ministers and the
ratification by the Spanish Parliament of the ESO Convention and the
associated protocols, Spain intends to become ESO's 12th member
state on 1 July 2006.
We should remind our readers that in 1997 the Greek National
Committee for Astronomy (GNCA) appointed an External Committee,
chaired by Prof. Y. Terzian (Cornell Univ.), to investigate and
report on the possible directions of the Astronomical Sciences in
the 21st century in Greece. This report, available in the GNCA site:
http://www.astro.noa.gr/gnca/NEWS/ca-report2000.htm
was presented in meeting at the national Observatory of Athens in
October 1998 and had as the first priority of its primary
recommendations that Greece joins ESO. Unfortunately eight years
later no progress has been made on this issue. In the meantime, the
UK, in 2000, and Finland, in 2004, already joined ESO.
