Dimitris Sinachopoulos obtained his BSc in Mathematics from the University of Athens in 1975 and his PhD in Astronomy from the University of Vienna (Austria) in 1983.
From 1984 to 1988, he was Postdoctoral Researcher at Sternwarte Bonn (Observatory of the University of Bonn, Germany). From 1989 to 1992, he was TMR researcher (Marie Curie fellow) at the Royal Observatory of Belgium. During 1992-1998, he worked as researcher at the Royal Observatory of Belgium and in 2002, as guest researcher at the Institute of Astrophysics (Potsdam, Germany). Since 1990, he has been Guest Professor at the Observatoire de Bordeaux (France), South Africa University (South Africa) and Brazil University of Sao Paolo (Brazil). Since 1985, he has also been visiting observer at Chile, Canary Islands, Southern Spain, France and South Africa. He joined as a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Astronomy of the National Observatory of Athens, from where he retired in 2018. |

Emeritus Professor of Astrophysics, Department of Physics, University of Athens, Greece. He was born in Filiatra, Messinias on the 29th of July, 1951. He obtained his B.Sc. in Physics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1974) and the M.Sc. in Physics (1976) and the Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, U.S.A. He has worked as Research Associate at the Enrico Fermi Institute, Univ. of Chicago (1980-1981) and at the Harvard University (1981-1983) where he worked as a Lecturer (1983-84) before elected as Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics, University of Crete (1984-1988). He worked at the University of Crete as Associate Professor at the Department of Physics
(1988-1997) and as Professor, (1997-2001) before
elected at his present position. He served as the President of the National Observtory of Athens from 2011 until 2016. He has worked as
Visiting Professor at the University of St-Andrews
(UK, 1991-1992), at the University of Torino (Italy)
(1992) and at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven,
(Belgium) (1996), and as Visiting Scientist at the
Observatoire de Paris (France) (1991-1992). For
two years (1989 -2001) he has worked also as a
Researcher at the Foundation for Research and
Technology Hellas (FORTH), IESL. His scientific
interests include Plasma Astrophysics,
Magnetohydrodynamics, Cosmical Magnetic
Fields, Solar Physics, Solar and Stellar Winds, Accretion Disks, Star Formation, Cosmic Jets, Active Galactic Nuclei, Quasars, Black Holes, Plasma Equilibrium and Stability, Nonlinear Differential Equations and Space Instrumentation. He has published over 100 scientific papers in refereed journals and more than 100 papers in conference proceedings and special volumes / books. He has published three textbooks: “Classical Mechanics” (2002), “Introduction to Theoretical Mechanics” (2004) and “Plasma Physics/ Astrophysics” (2005). He is a member of the Hellenic National Committee for Astronomy (2002 -), Hellenic Delegate to ESA’s Science Program Committee (2004 -) and Member of the Hellenic Council for Research & Technology–Physics, Chemistry, Materials (2004 -). He is a member of the American Physical Society, of the American Astronomical Society, of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and a Founding member, Secretary (2002- 2006) and President (2006-2010) of the Hellenic Astronomical Society (Hel.A.S.). |
