Abbott William (1906-2001)
Honorary Assistant Professor of Astronomy, University of Athens, Greece (born 1906). He got his Physics degree from the University of Athens, Greece (1927-1932) and his Ph.D. from the same University (1946). He had worked as Assistant Professor at the University of Alaska, U.S.A. He had published 7 papers on the Cepheid variable stars and textbooks. He had been honored with a literature award from the National Academy of Athens, Greece. |

George Adamopoulos was born in 1899 at the village of Kranidi in Peloponnese and passed away in 1977 in Athens. He obtained his BSc in Physics as well as his PhD from the University of Athens. His thesis, entitled "The Moon and the weather", was completed under the supervision of Prof. Plakidis in 1945. His whole research career was at the National Observatory of Athens where he was responsible for the operation of the equatorial telescope. He performed a wealth of observations of variable stars, comets, and planets of our solar system. |

He was born in Athens in 1916 and passed away in 1990. He obtained his BSc in Mathematics and his PhD in Astronomy (under the supervision of Prof. Plakidis) from the Univ. of Athens. After his PhD spent time as a postdoctoral researcher in France. He was assistant at the docent at the astronomy laboratory of the the Univ. of Athens (1941-1948). In 1949 he was elected extra-ordinary professor and in 1961 Full Professor at the National Technical Univ. of Athens in the Chair of General Astronomy and Geodesy. He served as alternate minister of transport and telecommunications in 1974. |
