1. Short News

We would like to congratulate Dr. Thalia Traianou who was recently awarded a postdoctoral fellowship and moved from Max Plank Institute for Radio Astronomy (Germany) to the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (Spain). The Society extends its best wishes for further success in her professional pursuits.

We would like to congratulate Prof. Vicky Kalogera who was recently elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The Society extends its best wishes for further success in her professional pursuits..

2. 2021 Shaw Prize in Astronomy to Chyssa Kouveliotou

The Governing Council of Hel.A.S., on behalf of all members of the Society, would like to send the warmest congratulations to Prof. Chryssa Kouveliotou a Founding Member of Hel.A.S. who, together with Prof. Vicky Kaspi, was awarded today the 2021 Shaw prize in Astronomy. See the associated IAU Press Release.

The Shaw Prize is an annual award first presented by the Shaw Prize Foundation in 2004. Established in 2002 in Hong Kong, it honours "individuals who are currently active in their respective fields and who have recently achieved distinguished and significant advances, who have made outstanding contributions in academic and scientific research or applications, or who in other domains have achieved excellence. The award is dedicated to furthering societal progress, enhancing quality of life, and enriching humanity's spiritual civilization.". It should be noted that a number of distinguished scientists including many Nobel prize winners, have also been awarded the Shaw Prize.

3. Upcoming 15th Conference of Hel.A.S.

The 15th Conference, with more than 200 registered participants, is less than 40 days away. The SOC has already announced the selection of oral and poster contributions. Since the conference will take place virtually, posters will need to be prepared in the form a short video, no more than 5min in length, which must to be provided no later than Friday, 25 June, 2021. Details on how to prepare the short video using ZOOM, as well as how to submit it to the IT support of the conference will be sent to by e-mail during the first week of June.

All registered participants are requested to pay the conference registration fee (10 Euros for Junior Members and 20 Euros for Ordinary/Associate members) using a credit card, via the dedicated secure server of the Society, before June 14, 2021. Practical details of the process are available as a PDF file.

During the General Assembly of the Society, which will take place on Tuesday July 6, 2021, new members of the Society will be elected. Since this is a once a year opportunity, would like to encourage everyone to inform potential applicants, in particular PhD students in Greece and abroad to apply. Details on the application process and benefits are available here.

4. The 2020 Nick Kylafis Lecture

The Institute of Astrophysics - FORTH is happy to announce that the 2020 Nick Kylafis Lecturer, Prof. Joseph Silk, will present his lecture entitled "The Future of Cosmology", on June 3, 2021 @17:00 (UTC +3:00). The lecture will be streamed via ZOOM.

The “Nick Kylafis Lectureship” was established in 2019 in order to honor Nick Kylafis, Professor Emeritus at the Dept. of Physics of the Univ. of Crete and past President of Hel.A.S., on the occasion of his 70th birthday, for his 35 years of scientific contributions and leadership towards the founding and continuous improvement of the astrophysics group at the University of Crete and FORTH. This lifelong commitment has been instrumental in the international recognition of the research activities of the Crete astrophysics group, which led to the creation of the Institute of Astrophysics at FORTH in 2018. Under the auspices of the Lectureship, one distinguished theoretical astrophysicist is invited annually at FORTH for a brief visit. Due to the restrictions of the pandemic the postponed 2020 Lecturer is presenting his lecture this year virtually.

Abstract: Our nearest star has always been a unique source for our understanding of the Universe in its many forms. The solar atmosphere and interior provide a working example where structures and dynamics can be studied over an enormous range of spatial (100 km – 100,000 km) and temporal (subseconds to months) scales. While we are only able to catch glimpses of these processes and phenomena in other astrophysical sources, the Sun provides a vantage reference point where the complex interplay between the plasma and the magnetic field is visible and can be studied with unprecedented detail. The colloquium will put some emphasis on some of the small-scale structures of the solar atmosphere and the parameters that can be extracted from them. The scientific capabilities of a new generation of large-aperture ground-based solar telescopes will be highlighted together with some important aspects of the solar-stellar connection.
